We are about to buy a new TV and a Blu-Ray DVD player. Can we play the regular DVDs in the new player, even though I know we won’t get the high quality? I’m just wondering if we should keep the old DVD player for all our regular movies or can we get rid of it, if the Blu-Ray plays the regular DVDs too.

A blu-ray player WILL play regular DVD’s and should also upconvert to 1080i
Make sure you go into the settings and set the player to your tv’s native contrast.
Blue-Ray will play standard DVDs also
A blu-ray player will play your regular DVDs and even upconvert them to near hd quality for you. Make sure you get a a Profile 1.1 or 2.0 player though or you won’t be able to use the cool picture in picture features on the blue ray movies.
Everyone here is correct. You can enjoy DVDs on a Blu-Ray player and it will even convert the DVD to higher quality. I’d still hang on to your old dvd player for a minute – just to be safe.
