Having experienced the best HD DVD has to offer with the Toshiba HD-XA2 I was a bit curious on where Blu-ray stood in terms of quality. The HD-XA2 is an amazing machine with upscaling capabilites that are second to none. Since the BD-P1200 used the same Reon chip, I was pretty sure my jump into Blu-Ray would be equally as good as HD DVD. WRONG!

The BD-P1200 is not a good player and Blu-Ray discs have a long way to go to match the quality HD DVD has to offer. My expreience with this player is just flat out bad. Locked up, pink screen when skipping over trailers, loading times are TERRIBLE and frankly, the video quality does not match the HD-XA2. Of course, I could of had a bad player but the fact is this player doesn't support alot of the future specs of Blu-Ray which essentially makes the machine obsolete. Its no secret that Blu-ray is giving 5 free movies away with a deadline by 10/31/07 which happens to be the day that BD-J 1.1 will be finalized. So guess what, all the players on the market now (including this one) will NOT be compatible with BD-J 1.1. This player does not also support current audio codecs like Tru-HD. Needless to say, I returned the BD-P1200 immediatley.

I would avoid Blu-ray until they get there act together. They need to put out a finished product both in software and hardware. Until then, I will be enjoying HD DVD on the top of the line HD-XA2.

This is a good Blu-ray player for the price. I did have problems with the first one I received though. The unit would occasionally freeze up when trying to load a disc. I couldn't even eject the disc. Onecall exchanged it and paid the shipping costs both ways, however. I have a fully functioning unit now and am quite pleased.

One gripe I have is that when you play Blu-rays it doesn't use the entire screen. Granted, the picture is near perfection but there is still the black bars on the top and bottom.

I have a Samsung Blu-Ray player (BD-P1000) which I bough 3 months ago from Amazon. I also purchased the Blu-Ray Pirates of the Caribbean Blu-Ray disk. Guess what? The Samsung player won't play the disk - won't even load it.

Before buying the BD-P1200, make sure it will play the disks you want. How will you know? I guess call Samsung.
